This image was submitted to a rubber stamp mail art competition at Light Work in 1981 titled 'Stamp Out Ronnie.' Light Work put out an international call to rubber stamp artists to express their ideas about the election of Ronald Regan in 1980 as president of the United States. First prize in the competition was a Ronald Regan Rubber Stamp set and $100.
The competition was organized by Joan Margaret Mary Riccardi. The competition accompanied an exhibition of rubber stamp art at Light Work also curated by Riccardi that included work by Barton Lidice Benes, Jon Held, Jr., Bruce Wood, Marty Blake (aka Ruby Rubber), Kihm Winship, Kimble Mead, Joan MM Riccardi, Carlo Pittore, Karen Bakke, and Bruce Velik.
Rubber stamps are used widely as mail art, that is, marking objects with rubber stamps that will be sent through the mail.
