For the past several years Anthony Hernandez has been photographing non-events; people waiting for a bus, folks fishing but not catching anything and office workers passing time midday, in downtown Los Angeles.
Although Hernandez uses a large and obvious 5x7 view camera, no one in any of his pictures seems to take note of the photographer. They all continue not catching fish, not boarding the bus and not going back to work. Perhaps Hernandez has discovered the true meaning of the negative in photography in his powerful and somewhat disturbing photographs.
Hernandez has exhibited his work extensively and received a Ferguson Grant in 1972 and a NEA photography fellowship in 1975, 1978, and 1980.
