Biography

Brian Arnold is a photographer, educator, and musician based in Ithaca, NY. He has undergraduate degrees in English and Ethnomusicology from The Colorado College, and an MFA in Photography from Massachusetts College of Art. With his photography, Brian continues to work with traditional black and white techniques and darkroom processes. His photographs have been exhibited in China, France, Italy, and the United States, and are included in a number of important collections, including the Museum of Contemporary Photography in Chicago, The George Eastman House in Rochester, The Colorado History Museum in Denver, and Light Work in Syracuse, NY. As a musician, Brian has studied and performed Balinese and Javanese gamelan since 1992.

During this time, Brian has worked with a number of renowned musicians from Indonesia and the United States, and has played and performed with a number of different orchestras in New York, Colorado, Boston, and Bali, including performances at a number of museums and universities across the country. He is currently a member of the Cornell University Gamelan Ensemble. Today, Brian is also a research fellow with the Cornell University Modern Indonesian Project in the Southeast Asian Studies Program, pursuing a study of photography in Indonesia. He was also recently awarded a grant by the American Institute for Indonesian Studies to continue his work in Bali and Java. Brian teaches photography in the School of Art and Design at the New York State College of Ceramics, Alfred University. Brian Arnold donated multiple prints and artist books to the Light Work Collection in 2006. A selection of this work was on view in the Community Darkrooms Gallery in 2007, for the exhibition 'Artist Showcase: Images by Brian Arnold.'
